#CutOutCutlery is headed to the State of California under the new Bill #AB 1276. We need your support by contacting your assembly member before June 4! #CutOutCutlery has convinced all food delivery applications to make plastic cutlery available by request only, and to further enforce this change we have the opportunity to pass a statewide “plastic cutlery upon request” bill in the California Legislature! It is one of the only source reduction bills in a larger Circular Economy Package of bills.
In response to the drastic increase in food takeout and delivery and online purchases as a result of the pandemic,AB 1276 (Carrillo)will require that food facilities and third party delivery platforms provide single-use food and beverage accessories such as utensils, napkins, and condiment packages only upon consumer request- significantly reducing unnecessary waste while saving businesses and local governments money. A win win!
There is one other bill in the Circular Economy Package that would make a big difference in reducing the amount of packaging used in online purchasing. AB 1371 (Friedman) will require a shift to e-commerce packaging that is either reusable or recyclable/compostable and phases out certain packagingsuch as plastic mailing envelopes, air pillows, and expanded polystyrene.
