Ship Greener
Ship Greener asks major online retailers to use correct size boxes with minimal filling and no plastic. By creating these simple changes, we will reduce millions of pounds of plastic and cardboard waste.

The Problem
There is an incredible amount of unnecessary plastic and paper packing materials entering the waste stream as a result of shipping from major online retailers. Amazon alone ships 1.7 million packages a day, with the number of plastic air pillows used each year enough to circle the planet 500 times. These habits are unsustainable for our planet!
Our Solution
Launched in 2023, our Ship Greener public pressure campaign encouraged our supporters to send a record number of emails to convince UPS and Amazon to reduce excess packaging.
We asked major online retailers to use the correct size boxes with minimal filling and no plastic at all. We also asked retailers to think sustainably when shipping to help reduce their carbon footprint. By creating these simple changes, we reduced millions of pounds of plastic and cardboard waste.

Public Works Departments and doctors across the U.S. believe in the quality of our tap water: they reiterate that “tap water is good!” The plastic water bottle industry is convincing us otherwise, however, just to increase sales.
The EPA regulates our drinking water, and in 2024 they announced the removal of “forever chemicals” (PFAS) from tap water. This is yet another reason to reThink Tap!
Our Impact
Our work helped lead to Amazon’s phase out of plastic packing pillows by 2024. UPS became a supporter of Ship Greener in 2023, and an official partner in 2024, creating guidelines for more sustainable shipping and supply chains.
Our campaign lead to Amazon's adoption of the Ship Naked standards, allowing people to select sustainable packaging, starting in 2023.

Amazon joins Ship Greener, Eliminating 15 Billion Plastic Pillows Annually
You emailed, Amazon listened! Thanks to a record number of email messages from our supporters, we were able to communicate to Amazon the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste in shipping. We appreciate the work of other nonprofits and coalitions as well to make this major change happen!
